Exploring Genre
Exploring different Genres. Welcome to the study of Genre. This term we will be looking at Fantasy, Crime Fiction, Sci-fi and Horror.
Week 1-2: Introduction to Genre - Horror Task 1: Genre is a French term meaning ‘type, style or classification’. We use genre every day to sort things into easily understandable categories. Brainstorm as many genres as you can think of under the following headings. Task 2: Read through each of the Horror extracts and annotate the literary techniques used (personification, simile, rhetorical question, descriptive language, imagery, dramatic pause, sensory imagery). Read the Tell-Tale Heart by Edgar Allan Poe Task 3: Go through the text again and highlight the examples of:
Prequel and SequelWrite a prequel or a sequel for Edgar Allan Poe’s The Tell Tale Heart. If you choose the prequel, consider explaining how the narrator came to live with the old man, why he is so fearful of the eye, or the actions of the past that made him mad. If you choose the sequel consider explaining what happens after he confesses. Does he kill the officers, get away, go to jail? You are the author so write it in your workbook!

Week 3-4: Introduction to Genre - Crime Fiction
Use the powerpoint to take down key notes on Crime Fiction Genre. Hard Boiled Detective Task 1: Read an extract from the Big Sleep and identify 3-5 examples that indicate this is hardboiled detective fiction. Task 2: Find an Example of the following; simile, metaphor, adjectives to establish setting, animal imagery, characterisation. Soft Boiled Detective Task 3: View the extract from Charmed Noir and identify 3-5 examples that indicate this is hardboiled detective fiction. Week 5: Introduction to Genre - Science Fiction
Use the powerpoint to take down key notes on Science Fiction Genre. QUESTIONS: There Will Come Soft Rains by Ray Bradbury This story is one of the most famous short stories in the speculative fiction genre. It was written and published in Bradbury’s highly acclaimed collection of stories, The Martian Chronicles, in 1951. Written in an era in which many people were concerned about the devastating effects of nuclear weapons, the story depicts a world in which humans have been destroyed by nuclear force. In this way, it can be said to be a post-apocalyptic narrative.

Week 6: Introduction to Genre - Fantasy Fiction
